The above picture shows what is officially known as the GATR array. This structure is what leads many to speculate that the area was used as a testing precursor to the HAARP array located in Alaska. It is alleged to have snown in Montauk Point during the summer here around 20 years ago, a fact that I have not been able to definatively verify. At any rate, this was really a big part of why we wanted to go out and investigate this time. It seemed simple enough, we even had a map showing us exactly how to get there. I took this picture from one of the scenic overlooks that dot the area out at the end of Long Island. |

Above is the "road" that was on the map. Needless to say, the adventure on that road turned quickly into a contest of who could remove the most ticks. This was just another oddity we encountered. Firstly, the GATR is located several miles away from the rest of the base, across Montauk Highway. However it is still considered part of Camp Hero, at least I believe it is. Also, whatever passed for a road leading to it is now gone, although there are worn ruts from vehicle traffic passing up and down the path. Did I mention the quicksand? It made it impossible to get to the array, a fact that really disappoints us. However my intenion is to try again in the winter, when the ground is frozen and the ticks are dead.
Another thing is that there are signs posted that say you need a special permit to use the trail. I felt that this must mean vehicle traffic, but I am no longer so sure. In any case, the search for the GATR must wait for now. I am looking into finding an alternative way to it, as the antenna's are still standing it is quite possible that the area is still being used. We just wont know until we can get to the spot and see for ourselves. |
