The final part of our investigation came unexpectedly as we walked back along the bluffs. We noticed a hill, and by then we had conditioned ourselves to the fact that any hill at Camp Hero contains some type of structure beneath it. We found a path to the top of the hill and did indeed realize we were standing on top of a building, as we found structures that looked like chimneys, with cement covers covering them. One of the structures however had a hole "chiseled" through it. Again we were able to stick our cameras through, and photograph a rather unimpressive pipe. I have no idea what its purpose could have been, perhaps for ventilation.
Upon going back down the hill, we circled it and found 3 or 4 entrances. One of which shows evidence that someone has been working hard to get in, it looks like with a boulder that is visible in the picture.
Finally as we left the area, we walked to the edge of the bluffs. It was truly a magnificent sight, the fog was pea soup thick, blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. There were these frogs making an eerie chorus, thousands of them in the distance crying for a mate. I commented to my friend that it was like "standing at the edge of the world" because as we looked out to the sea we could hear it but not see it. Only when we got to the edge did we see the water directly below, and we also received a shock! Quite a bit of the bluffs had collapsed over the winter, so we will mind those signs warning people to stay back more from now on.
So as for my conclusions about our third trip, I am more pessimistic about our findings than on previous trips. I suppose if we had gotten inside one of the structures, perhaps we could have gleaned more information. There was a story in a local paper here last week that part of the base is going to be opened to the public, and that is hardly what one would expect if there were validity to the rumors. Yet on the other hand, we were unable to check out the vicinity of the radar. And to all appearances there is an underground complex beneath that area. Also, we were unable this time to finish our exploration of the bluffs, in search of the alleged camouflaged doors there, which I intend to do at a later date. The fact that the ground level manhole covers were flooded leads me to believe that if there is an underground base out there, it is not below the water table. Yet as I said the radar and vicinity of structures lie on top of a large hill, the one where we found the tunnel leading out of the back of the house. So the fact of the matter is, we may never be able to either whole-heartedly debunk or advocate for the rumors surrounding the base. I intend at least one more trip out there, as I said, but I have doubts about how much we can accomplish, although I am sure that we can verify whether there are doors on the bluffs.
